A recent University of Toronto study from the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education suggests that starting lower-level head movement aerobic exercise can assist in a faster concussion recovery after a diagnosis. When it comes to head injuries there are a lot of discussions on the timeline of exercising after a concussion. Whether it is return to work, sport or play, the topic of exercising after the initial concussion injury is debatable by many industry experts.
What’s interesting about the article is the recovery period of individuals that exercised moderately soon after their initial injury versus those that did not. It suggests that moderate activity even as early as 24 hours after the injury can benefit and aid in concussion recovery. With that in mind it also reminds us that activities like stationary bike or walking are typically better as they are lower-level head movement activities unlike jogging or running.
